Learning a Musical Instrument

We are very fortunate to have 10 Visiting Music Teachers offering lessons in a wide variety of musical instruments.

The advantages of choosing an orchestral instrument is that, as well as becoming fully involved in the school ensembles and concerts and events at WGPS, players will always be in demand in their senior schools and beyond.

Furthermore, there is an increasing body of evidence to suggest that children learning an instrument do better at school.  Learning an instrument allows pupils to express themselves and grow in self-confidence whilst developing other skills such as hand and eye co-ordination, spatial and social skills, and self-reliance. They also develop better memories and are more likely to enjoy being at school.

By having lessons at school you can be assured of the very highest standards of teaching and safeguarding from experienced, specialist musicians.  Lessons are given during school time on the premises.  Some teachers start at 7.45am and are willing to stay after 3.30pm.  The Visiting Music Teachers liaise with class teachers to minimise disruption and avoid missing important work wherever possible.

If you are interested in individual lessons with a specialist instrumental teacher, please speak to Mrs Henderson, Director of Music.  Some of the woodwind and brass instruments do require children to have their adult teeth and hands big enough to manage the instrument.  The Director of Music is always happy to meet parents to discuss individual children’s suitability and interests and arrange a trial lesson.
