Building a Rights Respecting Community at Woodford Green Prep

Posted on: 19th Jan 2026

The UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) is based on the principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. A Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.

At Woodford Green Prep, we are committed to nurturing our learners to improve well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. At WGPS we already offer so much that reinforces the rights respecting message: we use Zones of Regulation; we have a variety of platforms to obtain pupil voice which we can then use to inform decision-making; we have robust Safeguarding systems and protocols in place.

The RRSA Award provides a clear framework which corroborates what we are already doing in school, and it provides fantastic additional opportunities for collaboration which will further strengthen the bonds within our whole-school community.

I am delighted to share that our school is embarking on its journey towards achieving the UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Award. This will entail a whole-school community commitment to learning about rights and modelling rights and respect in all its relationships, whether between adults and pupils, between pupils, or between adults.

Our first step is to achieve Bronze accreditation, with a view to achieving Silver and eventually Gold. We are very excited about promoting the child rights-based approach which we fully believe will support our pupils to be reflective, empathetic and resilient global citizens.

We believe this work is important because it gives children a shared language for understanding fairness, responsibility and respect, helping them to navigate relationships, challenges and decision-making with confidence both in school and beyond.
