Pastoral Workshops - Show Racism the Red Card

Posted on: 5th Mar 2024

This term we have run workshops for our pupils, aimed not only at keeping them safe but to also ensure their empathy and understanding of the world continues to develop, and supports their journey to become citizens of the future.

Years 4 to 6 took part in workshops led by ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ which were interactive, informative and enjoyed by all.

Riyan in Year 5 explained, ‘There were four topics that we covered: skin colour, religion, culture and nationality. We talked about terms that people use that are racist; when terms are descriptive and when not to use certain language. We were told to never describe people in anger using their skin colour, religion, culture or nationality.

He also told us about the founder of his workshop who was a famous footballer that was abused in the streets by his own fans. He gave us examples of people and we had to guess their job, religion, background or nationality. He did this to break down stereotypes and to teach us that we are all different in how we look but that we also have shared interests.

Our platinum rule was: To treat others how they would like to be treated.’
