Book Week 2024 - Bedtime Stories

Posted on: 13th Mar 2024

This year we were joined by three children’s authors; Lucy Reynolds, James Sellick and Will Mabbitt. The children loved them and they definitely inspired and delighted them with their stories and humour. As well as this, the authors were really happy to sign books for those wanting to buy them. In class the children designed animal characters and listened to stories being told. Teachers asked their class to bring in their favourite bedtime story to share and there was some creative writing, to write their very own bedtime story.

The bear hunt was great fun with children running around outside in the playground trying to find the next clue. The mystery bedtime story was ‘Sleeping Beauty’ which everyone managed to find.

The Book Fair, run by Mrs Fox was very successful this year with just under £4000 made in book sales. The commission made from this will go towards new books for the school library, which is one of our most valuable resources in the school.

A pyjama day was some children’s idea of a dream day. One or two children said to me that they had always wanted to come into school dressed in pyjamas and now they were living out that dream! It was a super fun day, starting with a whole school assembly and the announcement of our school’s favourite bedtime story, ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’, which the children had been voting on.

The finale to book week was a storytelling extravaganza led by Years 5 and 6. The children had learnt two bedtime stories by heart and they retold them to the younger children. As well as this, the Year 5 and 6 children had built small dens in the gym where they could sit and tell their stories and the younger children joined them inside their dens. The whole school was involved and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Fox for her support with the authors and running the book fair throughout the week.

During the week we heard from lots of different authors, who inspired us with their knowledge and stories from their pasts. We had a workshop on how to design a character and it was fascinating to listen to a published writer. We also got to go on a word hunt around school. However, Friday was my favourite bit!

You won't believe what happened! It was the most surreal sight as the whole school walked around in pyjamas, even the teachers! My eyes widened in shock when Miss McMaster strolled into the playground proudly in her fuchsia pink unicorn pyjamas and cuddling a fluffy brown teddy bear! In year 5 and 6 we had the best task and that was to read to younger children! We made huge dens out of blankets and invited them in for bedtime story time!  The children that we read to absolutely loved the stories that we read and their faces lit up with joy. We had a great week and I surprised myself by learning two stories off by heart to act out to the younger children.

This year's Book Week theme was ‘Bedtime Stories’. The authors that came to visit were Lucy Reynolds, James Sellick and Will Mabbitt. We had an assembly with Lucy Reynolds where she spoke about her life and how she became an author which was very inspiring. We also had a workshop with Will Mabbit where he asked us to design a disgusting pirate character for his book, ‘The Unlikely Adventures of Mabel Jones’. It was so much fun and was hilarious to see all the crazy, creative pictures. Will Mabbitt also gave me some great ideas on how to improve my writing in school, which made me feel inspired to write some stories of my own. On the final day of Book Week we came to school wearing pyjamas and retold our favourite bedtime stories to the younger children, which we all enjoyed. We even made dens using snuggly blankets. It was a brilliant day! Book Week is one of my favourite events at WGPS because every day something exciting is happening such as  visiting the book fair, taking part in the bear hunt, meeting amazing authors and of course wearing pyjamas. I wonder what next year's theme will be?
